Hair Transplant Recovery: A Realistic Week-by-Week Timeline
Swelling, crusts, shedding and the long wait for growth — what actually happens after a transplant, and when.

Knowing what to expect after a hair transplant removes most of the anxiety. This is the timeline we walk through with every patient.
Days 1–7
Mild swelling of the forehead may appear around day 2–4 and settles on its own. Tiny crusts form around each graft; gentle washing as instructed helps them lift by about day 7–10. Sleep with the head elevated for the first few nights.
Weeks 2–6
The transplanted hairs shed. This ‘shock loss’ is expected and does not mean the follicles are lost — the roots remain and enter a resting phase. Exercise can resume after two weeks.
Months 3–6
Fine new hairs begin to appear, often unevenly at first. By six months most patients see clear improvement.
Months 9–15
Hair thickens and matures. Final density and texture are assessed at 12–15 months, when we take comparison photographs.
